K-pop Fan Club Membership Basics: What Makes an Official Fan Club Different
To join a concert presale or attend a music show pre-recording for your favorite artist, you often need an official fan club membership. Memberships are run differently by each artist and agency, so here's what to check when you join for the first time.
What is an official fan club membership?
It's a paid membership program run by the agency. Usually you join during a set recruitment period, and memberships last for a fixed term organized by "generation" (1st gen, 2nd gen, and so on). Some fan clubs accept sign-ups year-round, while others only let you join during recruitment periods.
What to check before joining
- Sign-up platform: You can only join through the platform the agency designates, such as Weverse, the agency's app, a fan platform or the official website. Use the link from the artist's official social media or the agency's notice.
- Korean vs. global: There are often separate memberships for Korean and international members, and benefits such as presales for events in Korea may differ.
- Your own name: Most memberships require identity verification, and the name on the membership is checked against your ID at event entry. Whether you can join under a family member's name, and what documents are required, varies by notice.
- Validity period and refunds: Memberships often don't renew automatically when they expire, and refund conditions after joining may be limited.
Common benefits
| Benefit | Description |
|---|---|
| Concert presale | A chance to book before the general sale. It doesn't guarantee you a seat. |
| Pre-recording and event entries | Eligibility to attend music show pre-recordings or fan events |
| Membership kit | Membership card, merch and more (contents differ by generation) |
| Exclusive content | Members-only boards, videos and more |
Benefits vary by artist and by generation. Before joining, check the list of benefits in the recruitment notice for that generation.
Avoid transfers and proxy sign-ups
Buying or selling membership accounts or member numbers is prohibited by most terms of service. If caught, your membership may be canceled or you may be denied entry to events, so the safest option is to join under your own name during the official recruitment period.
